2013: First Goal Reached

So, remember about two weeks ago when I said my goal was to finish three first drafts of novels this year?

Well, I’ve finished one.

It wasn’t the story I was planning on finishing first, but it’s one that’s been with me since I was in high school. I began writing this novel last year about this time, cranked out 68,000+ words, and set it aside as Master of Machines took hold of me and threw me back into the world of Antigone’s Wrath. When reviewing all the projects I started last year, this one called to me once again and I dove in and finished it up in about a week after my last blog post.

Looking Ahead: 2013

Lately I’ve been having a lot of conversations about what I’ll be doing in the next year. In doing so, it’s caused me to wonder if I’m not a little overambitious for everything I’ve got on my list of what’s getting done. I have multiple projects on three different creative fronts, another move, and all the other life things that go hand in hand with being a military spouse.

So many exciting things are coming this year, so I’ve decided to write up a little post telling you all a bit about them.

Happy Holidays

At the end of every year, most people take a moment to reflect on the ups and downs of the past few months. As such, I offer you this song, Count Your Blessings, as a soundtrack for your considerations. It’s a reminder that, no matter how dark the days get, there are always things to be thankful for. YWP/NaNoWrimo – The Half Way Point

I’m a few days late on this, but I’ve been playing catch up on NaNoWriMo.

November 15 was the half way mark. I was sitting at just over 20,000 of 50,000 words that day and had to get moving. Thanks to some word sprints and encouraging words from my friends and fellow writers, I pushed through some of the detailed world-building stuff I was working on and knocked out over 10,000 words in about 48 hours. As of this moment I’m sitting at almost 31,000 words. \o/

BULLY and Me.

It’s late.

I should crawl up to bed and sleep because tomorrow I have stuff to do.

But I can’t. My mind is busy thinking about things I haven’t wasted time on in years.

Tonight there was a screening of the documentary BULLY, and I finally took the plunge. I knew it would stir some powerful emotions inside me. I went in prepared for this… as much as I could have, anyway. [Read more…]

YWP Day #2

Another day, another evening of pre-NaNo prep work with Minions v1.0 and v2.0.

In looking over the workbook pages to come, I saw what the next “assignment” was and instantly cringed. It was going to be too much like homework. While this is fine when you’re working in a school setting, which is what they are designed for, it’s not really ideal for a parent guiding their children through novelling. Since this is a first time through for us as a family, I’m keeping plans loose. It’s a learning process for sure. I don’t want this to be “work” for my girls, in the way that school is, so I’m doing my best to stress that this is fun.
